Counterfactual

A counterfactual is a statement of what “would have” happened had something not occurred. An example of a counterfactual is “if the New York stock market crash of 1929 hadn’t happened, the worldwide depression of the 1930s would have been over by 1932.” Counterfactuals are an important part of explaining causation.
