Learning Pathway 2:
Ethics, Equity &
Inclusive Evaluation
Learn to build an ethical, equity-centered evaluation approach.
Good evaluation isn’t just about choosing the right methods. It also requires us to think carefully about who is involved, whose voices are heard, and how the evaluation process may affect the people and communities it serves.
In this learning pathway, the Eval Academy team has brought together practical resources exploring ethics, equity, and inclusion in the evaluation process. You’ll build your understanding of concepts like power, participation, culture, accessibility, and representation, while gaining practical ideas for putting them into practice. By the end of this pathway, you’ll feel more confident approaching evaluation in ways that are thoughtful, respectful, and responsive to diverse people and contexts.
The four domains in this pathway can be explored in any order—the letters are labels, not sequential steps. If you’re not sure where to start, see the points below!
“I want to strengthen the ethics of my evaluation practice” — Domain A
“My evaluation involves First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit communities” — Domain B
“I’m working with people who may have experienced trauma or harm” — Domain C
“I want my evaluation to be fair and inclusive for equity-deserving groups” — Domain D
Are you being thoughtful in your evaluations?
Ethical, equitable evaluation isn’t a box you check in your evaluation plan. It shows up in how you ask for consent, steward data, interact with participants, and present your findings in reports. Getting it right takes thoughtfulness, reflective practice, and care. Figuring out alone takes time and expertise that you may not always have available to you.
